There’s an absolute joy in watching another academic year wind down. The weather warms, spring blooms have sprung, and kids can look forward to a well-earned break from their usual routine. As parents and teachers, reflecting on how much our children have grown and developed from the first through the last day of the school year is rewarding.
While all of us need to take some time to rest and relax, parents and educators are also fearful of the “summer slide,” a term often used to describe the learning loss that tends to occur over the summer months. For kids to retain as much knowledge and skill development as possible from one grade to the next, it’s essential that they practice those skills over the long break. But summer learning for kids doesn’t have to look like the homework they do all year.
Online Summer Learning Programs
Online summer enrichment can be an especially great way for kids to keep their skills sharp. They can log in from home whenever they want to, so they don’t need transportation and can make their own schedule.
K12 provides virtual summer learning programs for students ranging from extracurricular activities and social gatherings to competitions and summer courses. Many of these programs are available to students, whether or not they’re currently enrolled in a K12-powered online school.
K12 Summer Quest
For added incentive, K12 hosts an annual summer learning competition where students can earn prizes and aim for a spot on the leaderboard. The K12 Summer Quest is hosted in the award-winning K12 Skills Arcade platform and is a free online summer camp for students in grades K–12. A new quest is unveiled each week in which students answer practice questions and are awarded coins, which they can use to redeem prizes. They can also play arcade-style games as rewards.
Parents set up their students’ accounts and gain access to a dashboard that displays information about student progress and skills mastery. Parents can also opt to receive a weekly email outlining their students’ accomplishments.
