Frequently Asked Questions

K12-powered online public schools are tuition-free, just like traditional public schools. Qualified families may receive a loaner computer. These computers are instructional property and must be returned when the student leaves the school. Families are responsible for providing some common household materials (such as printer ink and paper).

K12 also offers private school options with tuition costs. Scholarships and discounts may help make private school more affordable for families.

Most students at K12-powered online schools spend 5–6 hours learning each day, split between live online classes, independent coursework, and offline activities like reading and hands-on projects. Schedules vary by grade level and school, and attendance requirements apply just as they do in a traditional school. See what a typical day looks like at an online school by K12.

In elementary school, K–2 students typically spend 30–40% of their learning time online, and grades 3–5 spend 50–60%. Middle and high school students complete most coursework online, balanced with offline reading, projects, and labs.

K12-powered schools combine structure with flexibility. Most students follow a set schedule of live classes and independent work, but they can learn from anywhere with an internet connection, take breaks between lessons, and balance outside interests and commitments. Some schools also offer Flex programs and flexible pacing options.

Enrollment is simple. Find your school, complete the online application, submit any required documents, and work with an enrollment advisor to finish the process. Visit the How to Enroll page for step-by-step instructions.

Teachers provide personalized support, feedback, and resources to help students catch up and stay on track. Students can work at their own pace and access additional support when needed. Credit recovery programs and summer school can also help students who are behind on credits make up coursework and get back on track for graduation.

Many Learning Coaches balance work and other responsibilities. Your role is to provide support, help with organization, and encourage your student while teachers handle instruction. If you or your child’s legal guardian cannot fill this role, you may choose a family member, friend, or another trusted adult to serve as Learning Coach.

Yes. K12 supports students with a variety of learning needs through personalized instruction and services. State-certified teachers at K12-powered schools work with families to support students with IEPs, 504 plans, and other accommodations while monitoring progress toward their goals.
